Casa Paola is an easy 10km drive to historic Lucca. The history of the village Aquilea can be traced back to the roman empire and the village was wealthy and populated into the middle ages. The town belonged to the "vescovo," or bishop, of Lucca, where the ruins of a medieval castle are still visible. The village is located in the nearby hills of the Garfagnana valley, a great place to walk, for horseback riding or just to enjoy a day in the mountainside surrounding villages, tasting local food and wine at very moderate prices.
Casa Paola is centrally located for convenient day trips to Lucca (15 minutes), Pisa and the sea-side beaches of Viareggio (30 minutes), Montecatini, the famous spa town,(40 minutes). You can drive your car to the Lucca train station and from there, it is a pleasant hour by train to the Florence station in the center of town, thereby avoiding traffic and parking problems. It is are about an hour and 15 minutes from Siena or a scenic 1 hour drive to the splendid Cinque Terre.
