About Fattoria La Sciolta

The guest house cottages of Fattoria La Sciolta include Villa Edera, Villa Leccio Antico and Casa Tre Querce.

The apartments of Fattoria La Sciolta include Casa Gialla, Casa Nero, Casa Verde, Casa Bianca, Casa Blu and Casa Rossa.

la-sciolta1On the eastern side of the Chianti area, in a beautiful setting of rolling, wooded hills, sit the guest houses of Fattoria La Sciolta. Built as a hunting lodge and guest cottages at the turn of the century by a Swiss woman who blended the northern style construction with Tuscan brickwork, the houses were frequented by Mussolini and his associates, among other famous guests. It was owned by the famous Finzi-Contini family for awhile and in 1954, the Morelli family purchased the fattoria, or farm.

Today, the guest houses have been completely updated, with modern kitchens and baths. They are very comfortably furnished and have terraces and gardens to complement the indoor spaces. The site is shaded with mature oaks and holm oaks, which are evergreen. The houses are suitable rented independently, and as a group would be a wonderful place to have a family reunion.

The owners of La Sciolta, a young couple named Cristiano and Gabriella Morelli, live on the estate full-time, speak English and are wonderful hosts to their guests. There are grocery stores within 5-10 minutes by car and lots of wonderful restaurants and trattorie in the area. The closest train stations are in Certaldo and San Gimignano, about 10 minutes away by car.

la-sciolta2The Morellis can arrange for cooking lessons in your house (minimum of 4 people) and can also hire a cook to prepare dinner in your house for one or more nights during your stay. The Morellis press the olive oil from their own olives which grow on the estate, and the oil is available for purchase — and it's fabulous!

The grounds at La Sciolta offer a variety of entertainment. There is a volley ball court, large 4 foot deep swimming pool, and hiking trails throughout the 150 hectare property.

la-sciolta3La Sciolta is ideally located for exploring all of Tuscany (about midway between Florence, Siena and Pisa) in the middle of Chianti and Vernaccia wine country and there are lots of vineyards to explore in the area. It is within an hour of most of the major cities and only 15 miles northwest from the well-known hill town of San Gimignano. Other nearby towns of special interest include Volterra and Vinci, birthplace of Leonardo. Gambassi Termi, the nearest town, has all necessary services and a thermal spring famous for its curative powers that have attracted travelers since Neolithic times.
